Though Sibelius would live for another 33 years after the 7th's completion, this haunting outpouring of expression in one unified movement was to be his last completed symphony. His unfinished 8th Symphony, one of the great mysteries of classical music, remained only a "work in progress", and was eventually destroyed by the composer - perhaps Sibelius felt he could not equal the perfection of form and development he achieved in the 7th Symphony? We shall never know...
